A special panel of Supreme Court judges, including Justices Sanjiv Khanna, MM Sundresh, and Bela M Trivedi, is slated to adjudicate Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s challenge against his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.
Allegations have arisen from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), contending that authorities have put Arvind Kejriwal’s family under house arrest. Gopal Rai, a prominent AAP leader and Delhi minister, claimed that he was barred from visiting them, raising questions about the legal justification for such actions.
Saurabh Bharadwaj, another AAP figure, accused the central government of obstructing access to Kejriwal’s family, lamenting a departure from basic human considerations even observed during colonial rule. He emphasized the unprecedented nature of a sitting Chief Minister’s arrest by the central authority, portraying it as a political ploy orchestrated by the BJP.
Echoing Bharadwaj’s sentiments, AAP’s Atishi underscored the exceptional circumstances surrounding Kejriwal’s arrest, attributing it to the BJP’s machinations. She voiced concerns over Kejriwal’s safety, particularly given his high-level security status.
Kejriwal’s arrest, which occurred late on Thursday, stems from a money-laundering investigation linked to the Delhi liquor policy scandal. The AAP has consistently claimed that the arrest is politically motivated, alleging that it represents an attempt by the BJP to undermine Kejriwal’s leadership and tarnish the party’s image ahead of key elections.
The developments have sparked a flurry of reactions, with supporters of Kejriwal and the AAP expressing outrage over what they perceive as unjust treatment by the central government.
