Irfan Pathan’s Candid Outlook on MS Dhoni’s Role in IPL 2024: ‘Met Dhoni Recently, His Knee…’

The IPL opener on March 22 at Chepauk Stadium will witness CSK facing RCB, marking the return of not only Dhoni but also Virat Kohli to competitive cricket.

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will commence with a highly anticipated clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday. This match not only marks the beginning of the T20 extravaganza but also signifies the return of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to competitive cricket after a hiatus since the last IPL. However, there’s widespread speculation regarding the role Dhoni will assume for CSK this season.

Following a knee surgery last year post-IPL, Dhoni is deemed fit for the upcoming season. Nonetheless, CSK faces significant challenges in their batting order. With Devon Conway ruled out and Shivam Dube injured, coupled with Ambati Rayudu’s retirement, the team’s batting lineup has encountered setbacks. While Rachin Ravindra was acquired in the auction last year, this IPL edition will mark the Kiwi youngster’s debut in the tournament.

Given the notable absences, there’s conjecture about Dhoni potentially reshuffling his batting order. In the past two seasons, Dhoni predominantly occupied the lower order, focusing on brief yet impactful innings, relying on his leadership skills to guide the team. However, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan, following a recent meeting with Dhoni, suggests that a change in Dhoni’s batting position is unlikely.

Pathan, speaking to Star Sports, acknowledged Dhoni’s fitness, observing his active participation in pickleball sessions. Despite Dhoni’s robust physical condition, Pathan believes there won’t be a drastic alteration in his batting approach. Dhoni’s role in recent years has been characterized by brief yet explosive innings, and Pathan anticipates this trend to continue, emphasizing Dhoni’s desire to contribute both with the bat and as a captain.

The IPL opener on March 22 at Chepauk Stadium will witness CSK facing RCB, marking the return of not only Dhoni but also Virat Kohli to competitive cricket. Kohli, who has been on a hiatus since January to attend to family matters, is set to resume action, adding further excitement to the much-anticipated encounter.
