Hardik Pandya is poised to usher in a new era at Mumbai Indians as he assumes leadership duties for IPL 2024. Returning to the team where he began his IPL journey, the dynamic all-rounder departs Gujarat Titans after steering them to consecutive finals, showcasing his leadership prowess on the grand stage. However, stepping into the shoes of Rohit Sharma, a five-time IPL-winning captain, presents a formidable challenge for Pandya.
Adding to the intrigue, this season marks the first time Rohit will play under Pandya’s leadership, sparking reports of unrest within the MI camp following the significant captaincy change. Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody believes that Pandya, being a respected player and proven performer, will garner the support of his teammates in the upcoming season.

“He has a team that will alleviate the pressure of inconsistent performances. With his stature as a highly respected cricketer and a proficient all-rounder, Pandya will have the backing of both Indian and overseas players,” Moody expressed to ESPNCricinfo.
However, Moody also cautions that captaincy dynamics can swiftly change in the face of losses, with scrutiny intensifying on decision-making processes.
“Pandya led Gujarat Titans to IPL victory in their inaugural 2022 season and steered them to the final last season, where they fell short against Chennai Super Kings. In Mumbai, he will lead a stellar lineup including Indian stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.

“When you’re winning, even the most unconventional decisions can be hailed as strokes of genius. Pandya has proven his mettle as leader of Gujarat Titans, possessing tactical acumen and bolstered by support from senior players, both Indian and overseas,” noted Moody.
Pandya’s first test as Mumbai Indians’ skipper will commence against his former franchise, Gujarat Titans, on March 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
