500th Test Wicket For Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s esteemed spinner, achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the fastest Indian bowler to claim 500 Test wickets for his country. He accomplished this feat on Day 2 of the third Test against England in Rajkot. Ashwin had come close to reaching this milestone in the second Test against England in Vizag, falling just one wicket short. However, he didn’t have to wait long to celebrate this significant achievement.

Ravichandran Ashwin 500th Test Wicket

Ashwin’s achievement places him second on the list of fastest bowlers to reach 500 Test wickets, behind Sri Lanka’s legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, who accomplished the feat in 87 matches. Ashwin achieved this milestone in his 98th Test match, surpassing the previous record held by Anil Kumble, who reached 500 wickets in 105 matches. Other notable bowlers on this list include Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh, James Anderson, and Stuart Broad.

Notably, Ashwin is only the third off-spinner in cricket history to reach the 500-wicket mark, joining the ranks of Muralitharan and Australia’s Nathan Lyon. Despite being the second-highest wicket-taker for India, behind Kumble, who ended his career with 619 wickets, Ashwin’s achievement solidifies his place among the all-time greats of the game.

The 37-year-old Ashwin reached this milestone during the ongoing Test match, needing just one wicket to achieve it. He dismissed England’s opener Zak Crawley, who mis-timed a sweep shot, resulting in a catch by Rajat Patidar at short fine leg.

Ashwin’s journey to becoming a premier spinner for India has been remarkable. Initially starting as a top-order batsman, he transitioned to off-spin bowling due to a back injury during his teenage years. Following in the footsteps of legendary spinners like Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, Ashwin has consistently delivered for India, achieving numerous milestones along the way. With his exceptional talent and dedication, Ashwin has rightfully earned his place among the greatest spin bowlers in the history of cricket.
