Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a new initiative on Friday aimed at constructing 1,000 modern resting facilities for truck and cab drivers along national highways, aligning with the government’s focus on enhancing quality of life. Addressing the challenges confronted by drivers during long journeys, he revealed plans for the initial phase to establish these facilities equipped with amenities such as food, clean water, restrooms, parking, and resting areas across all national highways.

Speaking at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, he empathized with the hardships faced by drivers and their families, asserting that the scheme would not only enhance their living conditions but also contribute to safer travel, thus reducing accidents.

Citing a NITI Aayog report, which highlighted the significant role of trucks in meeting 70% of India’s domestic freight demand, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity for proper rest among long-haul drivers to ensure road safety. Stressing the alarming rise in road freight travel and the expected surge in truck numbers, he reiterated the importance of addressing sleep deprivation, a major factor contributing to accidents.

PM Modi underscored the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 as a pivotal platform uniting the mobility and supply chain communities. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Viksit Bharat vision by 2047, emphasizing the dynamic role of the mobility sector in India’s rapid advancement.

Highlighting India’s accelerating economy and its trajectory toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy under his government’s tenure, he noted the emergence of a burgeoning middle class and their increasing demand for various modes of transportation as a significant opportunity for the mobility sector’s growth.
