In a significant turn of events, Champai Soren, a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party, is poised to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand today. The oath-taking ceremony took place at 12:15 pm in the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi, as per PTI reports.
Champai’s floor test
This came after Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan, in a late-night move, invited JMM leader Hemant Soren’s loyalist to Raj Bhavan on Thursday to form the government. Within the next ten days, Champai Soren will also be required to prove his majority in a floor test.
The invitation followed Champai Soren’s urgent plea to the governor to acknowledge his claim for government formation promptly, addressing the political uncertainties in the state following Hemant Soren’s resignation on Wednesday.
During the period of uncertainty surrounding government formation, the JMM-led coalition had planned to relocate its MLAs to Telangana from Ranchi. However, this plan was abruptly canceled at the last minute due to poor visibility preventing the chartered planes from taking off.
Next CM of Jharkhand
Champai Soren is set to succeed Hemant Soren, who stepped down as Chief Minister following the Enforcement Directorate’s actions that led to his arrest in connection with an alleged money laundering case on Wednesday. Hemant Soren has been remanded to judicial custody until February 2. The charges against him are linked to a “significant racket involving the illegal transfer of land ownership by the mafia” in Jharkhand.
