Wada Kolam rice
A farmers’ cooperative society situated in Wada, Palghar district, Maharashtra, has dispatched 10 tonnes of the renowned Kolam rice, named after the region, for the preparation of ‘akshat.’ These rice offerings will be distributed as ‘prasad’ during the idol consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Wada Kolam rice also recognized as Zini or Jhini rice, hails from the predominantly tribal region and is renowned for its small, off-white grains and distinctive aroma. The Geographical Indication (GI) application for this rice variety was submitted in July 2020, and the official GI recognition was granted in October 2021.

‘Akshat’ refers to rice prepared with turmeric and ghee, commonly used as prasad in various religious functions. The farmers’ cooperative society’s consignment, comprising 10 tonnes of Wada Kolam rice, commenced its journey from Palghar two days ago, as confirmed by officials of the cooperative society on Friday.
Expressing their contribution to this significant occasion, a representative mentioned that sending this consignment was the least they could do to partake in such a momentous event.
