Elon Musk unleashes profanity on advertisers amid anti-semitic controversy

Elon Musk faced intense backlash after endorsing antisemitic content on his social media platform, X. In a candid interview, Musk initially expressed remorse for his tweet supporting an anti-Jewish post on Nov. 15, calling it one of his worst. However, he later delivered profanity-laced remarks, dismissing departing advertisers and rejecting accusations of antisemitism.

The controversy stemmed from Musk’s agreement with a user falsely claiming Jewish people were fueling hatred against white people through the “Great Replacement” theory. This conspiracy suggests a deliberate ethnic and cultural replacement of white populations by non-white immigrants.

Major U.S. companies, including Walt Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, and Comcast, suspended ads on X, triggered by a report from Media Matters highlighting ads next to posts supporting Nazism. X responded with a defamation lawsuit against Media Matters.

In the aftermath, Musk visited Israel, touring the site of a Hamas assault on Oct. 7. During a live-streamed conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on X, Musk reiterated his stance against antisemitism and hate speech.

The trip’s timing, independent of the controversy, was emphasized by Musk. Netanyahu praised Musk’s commitment to a better future during their meeting, acknowledging their prior discussion on advanced artificial intelligence at Tesla’s headquarters in September.

The conversation in Israel occurred shortly after Musk criticized the Anti-Defamation League. Netanyahu urged Musk to find a balance between protecting online free speech and combating hate speech, emphasizing the importance of such efforts.
