A 35-member committee has been announced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to create teaching-learning materials and syllabuses for the subjects of political science, sociology, psychology, geography, history, and geography for grades 6 through 12.
The 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), which was notified in July to finalize the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for these classes, has been followed by the Curricular Area Group (CAG): Social Science (including History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and Psychology), which is chaired by Michel Danino, a visiting professor at IIT-Gandhinagar, according to a notification from NCERT. It was anticipated that NSTC will also comprise a minimum of 11 CAGs across various subject areas. Thus far, it has established CAGs for the social sciences, IKS, and new pedagogy and learning materials.

“To ensure continuity with Grades 3-5, interdisciplinarity among subjects, and the integration of cross-cutting themes in Social Science, this Group will also coordinate with the Preparatory Stage CAG, as well as with other CAGs as required,” the NCERT notification said. “The CAGs—Social Science and Economics—will ensure this integration by sharing and discussing drafts of material prepared with each other, given the need for vertical and horizontal linkages and integration across disciplines in the social sciences,” the statement continued.
The other members of the committee were Banabina Brahma, an associate professor in the history department at Kokrajhar Government College in Assam, Maryland, and Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. Heeraman Tiwari, professor and chair of the Center for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, JNU; Javaid Iqbal Bhat, assistant professor, postgraduate department of English, University of Kashmir; Commodore Dr. Odakkal Johnson (Retd.), former director of the Maritime History Society; and Srinivas, chairman of the Center for Policy Studies in Chennai; among others.

The notification further stated, “The deadline for submitting Teacher Handbooks to NSTC and NCERT is February 25, 2024.” The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education has already been produced by NCERT, and the NSTC is currently finalizing the textbook content based on this framework. To align the school curriculum with the 2020 National Education Policy (NEP), NCERT is currently updating it.
