President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that he has chosen Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the United States’ post-operation strategy in Venezuela. This decision reflects a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach involving diplomatic, economic, financial, energy, and military measures.
White House adviser Stephen Miller announced the decision while briefing reporters. He stated that Rubio has been tasked with enforcing the president’s guidance and coordinating policy execution across federal agencies.
“The President of the United States has asked Secretary Rubio … to directly enforcement of the President’s post guidance and direction to be the lead on this process,” Miller said.
He further added, “The work involves energy policy, Treasury policy, financial policy, military policy.”
Emphasising collaboration, Miller said a broad team within the administration is implementing the strategy.
“It’s a big team, a group of people,” he said. “I’m just happy to serve on this incredible team on behalf of President Trump.”
Addressing questions about Washington’s role following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro and the installation of a temporary leadership in Caracas, Miller pointed to the United States’ control over key pressure points.
Economic leverage, he said, remains significant due to longstanding restrictions.
Notably, Miller referenced the US oil embargo, explaining that Venezuela requires American consent to engage in international trade.
“We have our massive fleet, our Armada still present there,” Miller said. “This is an active and ongoing US government military operation. So, of course, we set the terms and conditions.”
On the issue of deploying additional US personnel, Miller dismissed the suggestion that Venezuelan authorities were acting independently of Washington. Instead, he said the current leadership in Caracas was working directly with the United States.
Rejecting claims of mixed messaging from Venezuela’s interim leadership, Miller insisted that official discussions reflected full cooperation. He stressed that communications between the two sides had been consistent and constructive.
From the administration’s perspective, officials expect close coordination with the United States to drive economic improvement in Venezuela. Miller argued that cooperation would ultimately lead to greater prosperity for the Venezuelan population.
“Of course, the United States is going to benefit from this massively in terms of economic, security, and military cooperation, counter narcotics, counter terrorism, and every other division of our security,” Miller said.
Characterising the initiative as historic, Miller described the Venezuela operation as one of the most significant strategic realignments in US history. He said the administration viewed the events culminating in Maduro’s capture as a major military and geopolitical success.
Miller declined to speculate on whether the administration could apply similar strategies elsewhere, leaving observers with unanswered questions about how Washington’s approach might shape future foreign policy decisions.
