In a recent video circulating on the internet, members of the Taliban were observed patrolling the streets of Kabul on rollerblades, carrying AK-47 rifles and wearing camouflaged suits. Kabul Police spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the video, stating that it featured officers from the public security police under the Ministry of Interior.

Muslim Afghan, a member of the Taliban security team, expressed admiration for the skating skills of young members, describing it as “amazing balance and body strength.” The original video, posted by a parkour athlete named Yadullah Marvi, showcased what he called the “military performance of figure skating in the streets of Kabul.”

Despite these seemingly light-hearted activities, it’s crucial to remember that since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in July 2021, they have imposed a strict interpretation of Islam. Women, in particular, have faced severe restrictions, with the United Nations labeling the situation as “gender apartheid.”

Last December, the Taliban announced a ban on women attending educational institutes, drawing condemnation globally. The ban was enforced due to alleged violations of a dress code and the requirement for female students to be accompanied by a male relative when going to and from university campuses.

This educational restriction was part of a broader set of limitations on women’s activities, including bans on going to parks, gyms, fairs, salons, and mandatory full-body covering in public. Additionally, many women were removed from their government jobs.

While the rollerblading incident may present a seemingly light-hearted image, it’s important to view it in the context of the broader restrictions and challenges faced by the people of Afghanistan, particularly women, under Taliban rule.
