Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez reported that earthquakes have destroyed 189 buildings, killed 2,595 people, and injured over 12,000.
Since June 24, Venezuela has recorded 782 aftershocks, though their frequency and magnitude are decreasing.
To address the housing crisis, authorities are rapidly outfitting 25 temporary camps – including 13 in La Guaira, 8 in Caracas, 2 in Miranda, 1 in Carabobo, and 1 in Yaracuy – to relocate affected families.
Rodriguez, who directs the camp command centre, called on medical professionals, security guards, and firefighters to register on the Patria platform to support relief efforts.
Additionally, she declared seven days of national mourning starting Wednesday evening, stating, “In honour of the memory of the victims, I have decided to decree national mourning for seven days.”
“In these moments of tremendous pain, we comfort those who suffer from such a tragedy and keep our commitment to support and protect them,” she added.
Rodriguez also mentioned, “Venezuela’s soul is shattered by the human losses from the tragic earthquakes.”
Following the two 7.5 and 7.2 magnitude earthquakes that struck north of Caracas, tens of thousands of people remain missing.
In remembrance of the victims of the severe June 24 disasters, Rodriguez proclaimed a seven-day national mourning on Thursday.
Following inspections after the earthquakes, the Los Teques Metro resumed operations, connecting Miranda’s capital with Caracas, according to the ministry’s Instagram account.
Xinhua reported that the ministry confirmed normal operations for both the Valencia Metro and the railway system connecting Caracas with the Valles del Tuy region.
