US President Donald Trump has said the United States will continue to hold control over the Strait of Hormuz until Iran agrees to terms, describing the move as a key lever in ongoing tensions.
“We have total control of it,” Trump stated, adding, “It’ll open when they make a deal or something else happens that’s very positive.”
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial route for transporting oil from Gulf producers to the rest of the world. Any interruption typically triggers market uncertainty and price fluctuations.
Trump made it clear that the restriction aims to limit Iran’s oil income.
“If we open the Strait, that means they’re going to make $500 million a day. I don’t want them to make $500 million a day until they settle this thing,” he asserted.
The US President acknowledged that consumers could feel some impact in the short term. When asked about fuel prices, he replied, “For a little while.”
Despite this, Trump pointed to stable economic indicators.
“The stock market is at an all-time high. I thought oil would go up to maybe $200 a barrel. And oil is at a very different number than anyone thought,” he asserted.
The administration has emphasised domestic production as a cushion against disruption.
“We’re putting out right now more oil and gas than we ever have in the history of our country,” Trump noted.
The US President also claimed global demand is shifting towards US supplies.
“Ships are coming from all over the world to Texas, Louisiana and Alaska to get oil from the United States while this is closed,” he added.
Trump tied the approach to broader security concerns, stating, “You can’t let them have a nuclear weapon.”
The US President further suggested that urgency does not bind the negotiations.
“I don’t want to rush it; we have plenty of time,” he said, indicating that pressure on Iran will likely build as restrictions on oil flows continue.
