On Monday, the United States called on India to utilize its long-standing relationship with Russia to persuade President Vladimir Putin to end his illegal war in Ukraine and pursue a path to lasting peace.
State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller addressed the issue during a press briefing, responding to questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Moscow and his discussions with President Putin, which have drawn considerable attention in Washington.
“India has a deep-rooted relationship with Russia,” Miller stated.
He further added, “From our perspective, we encourage India to leverage this unique position to urge President Putin to cease hostilities and seek a just and enduring peace.”

Miller emphasized the importance of India advocating for the respect of the UN Charter and Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
“We continue to urge the Indian government, a vital partner for us, to communicate these principles to President Putin,” he added.
The US government’s appeal highlights the ongoing complexities of international relations amid the conflict, as it seeks to align strategic partnerships with calls for adherence to global norms.
