Joe Biden seals his candidacy for US Presidential elections
In order to face off against former President Donald Trump in the elections later this year, US President Joe Biden secured his nomination as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate on Wednesday, according to US media.
In Georgia’s primary, Mr. Biden, who required 1,968 delegates to win the nomination, reportedly exceeded that total, according to US media. Similar outcomes are anticipated in Mississippi, Washington, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Voters determine how many delegates each party convention receives, and these delegates then choose the party’s presidential nominee. This process is known as an indirect election, or primary. To win the party’s presidential nomination in the primaries, a candidate must receive the votes of the majority of delegates at the convention.
“Voters now have a choice to make about the future of this country. Are we going to stand up and defend our democracy or let others tear it down? Will we restore the right to choose and protect our freedoms or let extremists take them away?” news agency Reuters quoted Mr Biden as saying, soon after the win.
Following his victory in 14 of the 15 state contests on “Super Tuesday” last week, former US President Donald Trump is expected to repeat a similar victory for the Republican Party later today. Nikki Haley, his previous opponent for the Republican nomination, ended her campaign.
The 77-year-old has been juggling court appearances while on the campaign trail. He is the first former US president to go on trial in a criminal case to conceal hush money payments to a porn star. In four indictments, Mr. Trump is charged with 91 felonies, including trying to rig the 2020 election. In addition, he is the only US president to face impeachment twice.
The majority of voters believe that Mr. Biden is too old to serve in the White House for another four years, which has prevented him from taking office again. The 81-year-old leader’s other vulnerability is the continuous crisis at the US-Mexico border, where an influx of migrants has overwhelmed the system. A tense situation between the two groups has also arisen from the recent death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was purportedly killed by an illegal immigrant.
Following an intense State of the Union speech, the US president attacked his Republican opponent, charging him with endangering democracy. He proclaimed, “I will not bow down,” vowing to uphold Roe v. Wade in order to thwart the Republican effort to limit access to abortion.
