US President Trump Says Alaska Summit With Putin Faces 25% Chance Of Failure

US President Donald Trump has projected a 25 per cent chance that his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, may not succeed.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News Radio on Thursday, Trump likened the upcoming summit to ‘a chess game’ and said he believes Putin intends to make progress toward a resolution in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Trump indicated that a positive outcome in Alaska could pave the way for a second meeting, potentially including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He said trilateral talks could take place at ‘three different locations’, with Alaska among the possibilities.

Warnings & Expectations

Earlier in the week, Trump warned that Russia would face ‘very severe consequences’ if it refused a ceasefire. Despite this, he expressed optimism about the summit, stating, “I believe now he’s convinced that he’s going to make a deal. He’s going to make a deal. I think he’s going to. And we’re going to find out, I’m going to know very quickly.”

While White House officials had described the session as a ‘listening exercise’, Trump stressed that the outcome depends on the discussions’ quality, “If it’s a bad meeting, I’m not calling anybody, I’m going home. But if it’s a good meeting, I’m going to call President Zelensky and the European leaders.”

Trump declined to provide specifics on possible economic incentives or disincentives for Russia during the meeting, stating he did not want to ‘play my hand in public’.

He noted that economic incentives, in combination with other measures, could play a key role in facilitating a peace agreement.

The Alaska summit marks a rare direct encounter between Trump and Putin, aiming to address one of the world’s most enduring conflicts.

The world is closely watching the meeting as a potential step toward broader negotiations. Zelensky has voiced concern about being excluded from the initial talks, but Trump has assured him that he will receive a briefing on the outcomes and hinted at a future three-way discussion.

Security and timing considerations have shaped the summit, so organisers have scheduled the Alaska meeting to last only a few hours.

Observers are monitoring whether this high-stakes encounter could break the deadlock in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and potentially bring European leaders into the fold for subsequent negotiations.
