US President Donald Trump Targets BBC In AI Dispute; Pushes For Jimmy Lai’s Release

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to file a lawsuit against the BBC, alleging that the British broadcaster used artificial intelligence to falsely attribute statements to him.

The President also revealed that he personally urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider the release of imprisoned Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai.

Speaking to reporters at the White House after a ceremony honouring US service members, Trump accused the BBC of broadcasting remarks he never made, describing the incident as a serious breach of journalistic standards.

“They actually put terrible words in my mouth,” he said. “They had me saying things that I never said.”

Trump suggested that artificial intelligence may have been used to fabricate or alter his comments.

“I guess they used AI or something,” he added, claiming the broadcaster ignored his actual statements while airing comments he denied making.

Trump confirmed that legal action would follow soon.

“We’ll be filing that suit probably this afternoon or tomorrow morning,” he said, branding the coverage as fake news.

He noted that the alleged misrepresentation related to his remarks on the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

According to Trump, his ‘beautiful words talking about patriotism’ were omitted, while false statements were broadcast.

The President claimed the issue had become so apparent that even internal BBC staff acknowledged the error.

“I believe somebody at the BBC said this is so bad, it has to be reported,” he stated.

Increasing scrutiny in the United States and Europe has highlighted concerns that news producers are using artificial intelligence to manipulate audio, video, and text, presenting them as authentic reporting.

During the press briefing, Trump addressed a separate matter regarding China and human rights. He said he had raised the case of Hong Kong media entrepreneur Jimmy Lai directly with President Xi.

“I spoke to President Xi about it,” Trump said. “I asked to consider his release.”

He cited humanitarian reasons, noting that Lai is ‘an older man, and he’s not well’.

Background on Jimmy Lai Conviction

Hong Kong authorities convicted Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, under the city’s national security law. The decision prompted criticism from press freedom groups and Western governments.

When asked about a potential response from Beijing, Trump replied, “We’ll see what happens.”

The President did not clarify whether Lai’s detention had impacted broader US–China relations, which remain tense over trade, technology, Taiwan, and human rights issues.
