US President Donald Trump has launched a sharp critique of European leadership, describing the continent as weak and led by people he considers politically correct.
Speaking to Politico in an interview published on Tuesday, he argued that European leaders are struggling to respond to mounting political and social challenges.
Trump claimed that policymakers across the continent ‘don’t know what to do’, asserting that Europe is losing its sense of direction. He argued that current border and migration policies risk undermining the long-term stability of several European nations.
The US president pointed to major cities such as London and Paris as examples of places strained by migration from the Middle East and Africa.
According to Trump, without significant changes to immigration policy, some European states will not be viable countries any longer. He maintained that Europe’s approach to migration and security remains ineffective, adding that leaders talk about solutions but don’t produce results.
Trump also dismissed Europe’s influence in efforts to end the Ukraine conflict. He argued that the continent’s leaders have failed to generate concrete progress, allowing the war to continue without meaningful resolution.
He reiterated his view that Russia currently holds a stronger position than Ukraine and repeated his call for Kyiv to hold fresh elections, a stance that has drawn widespread international debate.
Following the release of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy last week, which pledged to cultivate resistance to Europe’s existing immigration policies, European Council President António Costa issued a rebuke.
Costa stressed that allies should not seek to interfere in each other’s political or democratic processes, calling for mutual respect in transatlantic relations.
