Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that the Trump administration could restore aid and intelligence assistance to Ukraine, provided its leaders commit to peace efforts during a key meeting between senior officials from both nations in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

After arriving in Jeddah on Monday, Rubio told reporters that the US halted support due to concerns over Ukraine’s willingness to pursue peace.

“The aid was suspended because we felt the Ukrainians were not committed” to ending the three-year war triggered by the Russian invasion in 2022,” Rubio told The Washington Post.

He further added that US policy could shift if Ukraine demonstrates a genuine intent to negotiate.

“My hope is we’ll have a really good meeting tomorrow and be in a different place,” Rubio noted.

The Trump administration previously cut off all assistance, including intelligence sharing. This followed tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US leaders, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

The dispute saw heated exchanges, with Trump and Vance emphasizing the critical nature of US support and insisting that Ukraine show proper recognition and gratitude.

This stance is not new—former President Joe Biden spoke with Zelensky in 2022. He demanded action on the issue, months after Russia invaded and the US provided aid.

Zelensky publicly thanked the US soon after but took longer to extend the same appreciation to the Trump administration.

Just before Trump’s first address to Congress in his second term, Zelensky acknowledged the situation on social media.

Taking to X, Zelensky posted, “None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.”
