The US has extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to India, reaffirming its commitment to combat global terrorism in partnership with India.

US Reiterates Support For India’s Fight Against Terror

During a press briefing on Thursday (local time), US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the extradition and expressed the United States’ longstanding support for India’s efforts to bring the perpetrators of the 26/11 attacks to justice.

“On April 9th, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of 166 lives, including six Americans, that shocked the entire world,” Bruce stated.

She emphasized the significance of the move, saying, “We are proud of this development. He is in India’s possession, and we will continue to stand with India against the global scourge of terrorism.”

NIA Confirms Rana’s Extradition And Judicial Custody

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced earlier today that it had successfully secured Rana’s extradition after years of sustained diplomatic and legal efforts.

Authorities had held Rana in judicial custody in the US under proceedings initiated through the India-US Extradition Treaty.

After exhausting all legal avenues to prevent his extradition, Rana was finally handed over to Indian authorities.

A Special NIA Court has remanded him to 18 days of NIA custody.

NIA Presents Evidence; Cites Need For Custodial Interrogation

The NIA presented strong evidence, including emails sent by Rana, to justify the need for his police custody.

The agency stated that custodial interrogation is essential to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy behind the attacks.

According to investigators, Rana was pivotal in facilitating the 26/11 plot.

Accused No 1, David Coleman Headley, reportedly shared the entire operational plan with Rana before traveling to India.

Headley also sent an email to Rana, outlining his assets and informing him about the involvement of Ilyas Kashmiri and Abdur Rehman in the conspiracy.

The NIA plans to question Rana further to determine the depth of his involvement and to expose the network behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
