The United States has approved two defence support packages for India worth a combined $428.2 million, reinforcing the growing strategic partnership between the two nations and enhancing India’s defence preparedness.

According to notifications issued by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) and submitted to Congress, the proposed agreements focus on maintenance, logistics, training and technical support rather than the acquisition of new military equipment.

The larger package, valued at $230 million, provides long-term sustainment support for India’s M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. It includes spare parts, repair and return services, technical assistance, personnel training, field service support, depot capability and related logistics services.

The Pentagon stated that the proposal supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening ties with India, a key defence partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

US officials noted that the package would help India address current and future security challenges, improve homeland defence capabilities and strengthen deterrence against regional threats.

The principal contractor for the programme is BAE Systems, based in Cumbria, United Kingdom.

The Pentagon said the agreement would not require additional US personnel in India.

A separate $198.2 million package will support India’s Apache helicopters through training, engineering and logistics services.

Funded by India, both deals exclude new major defence equipment and underscore growing India-US defence cooperation, with bilateral defence trade now exceeding $20 billion.

The latest support packages underscore the importance both countries place on strengthening security ties and maintaining stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
