US And UK Forces Strike On Yemen Airport, Kamaran Island

On Monday, US and British forces launched at least six airstrikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah International Airport, as well as four strikes on Kamaran Island near the port of Salif in the Red Sea.

The strikes on Kamaran are the first time US-led coalition forces have attacked the island since airstrikes against Houthi sites began in early February.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government thinks Houthi forces have previously exploited Kamaran Island and Port Salif to launch Red Sea attacks and store missile and drone supplies in the country’s salt mines.

The 10-kilometres stretch of water between the port of Salif and Kamaran Island is also part of the path that ships must take to reach their next port of call.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital and most populous areas, have been attacking international shipping in the Red Sea since November in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Despite retaliation from the US-British alliance and other navies, the Houthis have recently increased their campaign of attacks on commercial vessels in one of the world’s busiest trade routes.
