Aaron Bushnell, a member of the US Air Force on active duty, burned to death outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC. The startling act of self-immolation on Sunday was witnessed by the 25-year-old airman from San Antonio, Texas, who could be heard shouting “Free Palestine.” According to AP, the Metropolitan Police Department announced on Monday that Bushnell had passed away from his wounds.

Bushnell was doused with a fire extinguisher before the arrival of the firefighters. At about one in the afternoon, he was transported to the hospital with potentially fatal injuries. Bushnell, a nearly four-year veteran of the US Air Force, posted his final Facebook message a few hours before the horrifying demonstration.
“A lot of us like to think about what we would do if we had survived the enslavement era. the Jim Crow South, perhaps? or the Apartheid regime? How would I respond if my nation was engaged in genocide? You are doing it, is the response. According to the New York Post, he wrote, “Right now,” along with the Twitch livestream link. The post was later removed, though, because it went against the community guidelines of the website.

According to AP, the incident occurred as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was requesting cabinet approval for a military operation in the southern Gazan city of Rafah while negotiations are ongoing for a temporary cease-fire agreement.
