UPI In Uzbekistan, $5 Billion Trade Target: PM Modi Unveils Key India-Uzbekistan Outcomes

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a series of agreements and initiatives agreed with Uzbekistan to expand bilateral cooperation, including upgrading the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and setting a $5 billion trade target by 2030.

Key outcomes from today’s talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent include:

Following his talks with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent, PM Modi said the two countries would step up collaboration in infrastructure, digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, energy and space. He said both sides would work towards improving market access, connectivity, banking and payment systems as part of efforts to strengthen economic ties.

A major development was the rollout of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Uzbekistan.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the move will support digital payments and further expand India’s digital public infrastructure internationally.

The two sides signed an MoU covering geology and mineral resources, including cooperation on critical minerals and uranium supply.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George said discussions on a long-term uranium supply arrangement had progressed and an agreement was expected shortly.

Cultural cooperation featured prominently in the outcomes.

India and Uzbekistan signed a letter of intent for the conservation and restoration of the ancient Buddhist sites of Fayaz Tepa and Kara Tepa in Termez.

The countries formalised cooperation in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine through an MoU.

Another agreement links India’s Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service with the Diplomatic Academy of Uzbekistan’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

The two countries signed an environmental cooperation agreement covering areas related to environmental protection and climate concerns.

PM Modi said the outcomes of the talks reflected the broadening scope of India-Uzbekistan ties and outlined a roadmap for deeper economic, technological, cultural and strategic cooperation.
