Unrest In Bangladesh: 29 Bodies Discovered Amid Political Turmoil

Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, local media reported on Wednesday that authorities found the bodies of 29 people, including 20 Awami League leaders, scattered across the country.

The deaths come in the wake of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and subsequent departure from Bangladesh on Monday, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.

Violence & Casualties:

Satkhira: At least 10 individuals lost their lives in the violence-stricken area.

Comilla: Mob attacks claimed the lives of 11 people.

The ongoing unrest has caused widespread destruction, with vandals looting and damaging the homes and businesses of Awami League leaders and activists. Multiple cities report incidents of arson.

Eyewitnesses recounted that an angry mob set fire to the house of former councillor Md Shah Alam in Ashoktala.

The fire resulted in the deaths of six people, including five teenagers. Their bodies were recovered between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Similarly, four people perished when a mob torched the house of Member of Parliament Shafiqul Islam Shimul of Natore-2 (Sadar and Naldanga) Constituency.

Searchers found the victims’ bodies scattered in various rooms and on balconies.

In Dhaka, vandals repeatedly set parts of the Awami League’s central office in the Gulistan area ablaze. Despite the fires, looters swarmed the building, taking furniture, tiles, rods, and other items. The office was first attacked shortly after Hasina’s resignation and again around 12:30 PM on Tuesday.

In Feni, police discovered the bodies of two Juba League leaders, Mushfiqur Rahim and Badsha Mia, on Wednesday.

Across Bangladesh, Awami League leaders and minorities have been the primary targets of the ongoing violence.

A particularly devastating incident occurred when a mob set fire to the Zabeer International Hotel in Khulna Division, killing 24 people. Shahin Chakladar, General Secretary of the Jashore District Awami League, owns the hotel.

Mamun Mahmud, Deputy Director of Khulna Fire Service stated, “The bodies were lying on different floors.”

The fire was extinguished around 5:45 AM local time on Tuesday.
