Amid growing international attention, US President Donald Trump has said that the United States will temporarily oversee Venezuela following the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro. Framing the move as essential, he argued that American leadership is required to stabilise the country. He added that such leadership is necessary to guide Venezuela through a secure transition.
Responding to questions about governance, Trump said the United States would be running Venezuela with a group. He noted that US officials were already being appointed to manage the process.
Emphasising caution, he said American control would continue until a ‘safe, proper, and judicious transition’ is achieved.
Warning against a rushed withdrawal, Trump stated that leaving too early would risk repeating earlier failures. According to him, Venezuela would have little chance of recovery without sustained oversight.
Highlighting economic priorities, Trump described Venezuela’s oil industry as critical to recovery and long-term stability. Moreover, he said years of mismanagement had severely damaged the sector and left vital infrastructure in disrepair.
Noting planned investments, Trump said major US oil companies would invest billions of dollars to rebuild and modernise Venezuela’s energy facilities. Stressing funding sources, he added that the rebuilding would be paid for directly by oil companies rather than US taxpayers.
Continued American Presence
Addressing operational plans, Trump said the United States would maintain a presence in Venezuela linked to oil production and energy management. He added that revenues generated would benefit Venezuelans while also reimbursing the United States for its involvement.
On military questions, Trump said the administration was ‘not afraid of boots on the ground’, pointing out that American personnel were already involved during the operation.
Clarifying political intentions, Trump said individuals associated with the Maduro regime would not be allowed to remain in positions of power. He added that US authorities were closely tracking those figures.
Speaking on diplomatic engagement, Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spoken with Venezuela’s current vice president. He claimed she was willing to cooperate with what the United States considers necessary for the transition.
Defending the approach, Trump said the move aligns with his ‘America First’ doctrine and the goal of maintaining stable neighbours. He added that Venezuela’s energy resources are important for regional and global stability.
Referring to international trade, Trump said the United States would sell Venezuelan oil abroad. He added that Washington would export large quantities to other countries.
Rejecting concerns about financial costs, Trump insisted the transition would not burden US taxpayers because of oil revenues. Historically, the United States has imposed sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector, accusing its leadership of corruption, economic mismanagement, and responsibility for the country’s collapse and mass migration.
Concluding his remarks, Trump acknowledged that the decision would attract global scrutiny as the situation in Venezuela continues to unfold.
