United Nations says Gaza’s civilians face immediate possibility of starvation amid war

The United Nations warned on Thursday that Gaza’s citizens face famine since food and water have become practically non-existent.

In a statement, the executive director of the Rome-based World Food Programme, Cindy McCain stated, “With winter fast approaching, unsafe and overcrowded shelters, and the lack of clean water, civilians are facing the immediate possibility of starvation”.

The United Nations agency, which has been warning about rising hunger in Gaza for weeks, said the bread was now scarce or non-existent and that it was impossible to meet current hunger needs with one operational border crossing.

It stated that the only hope was to provide a second safe path for food into Gaza.

According to the World Food Programme, a scarcity of fuel is also hampering food delivery, with trucks arriving from Egypt on Tuesday unable to reach residents due to a lack of fuel.

The amount of food entering Gaza remains woefully inadequate, according to the UN, with only 7% of basic daily calorie needs met.
