Ukraine’s decision to withdraw its troops from the besieged city of Avdiivka marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. Despite valiant efforts by outnumbered defenders who held out against a Russian assault for four months, Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi announced the withdrawal, citing the need to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives of servicemen.
The timing of this decision is crucial, with Russia seeking a morale boost ahead of the second anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th and the upcoming presidential election in March. Syrskyi emphasized that the troops are being relocated to more advantageous positions after fulfilling their duty with dignity and inflicting significant losses on the enemy.
The withdrawal comes amidst reports of deteriorating conditions in Avdiivka, where Ukrainian forces faced overwhelming odds, outnumbered seven to one. However, while the capture of Avdiivka may offer symbolic victories for Moscow, experts suggest it may not lead to significant operational gains or alter the overall front line significantly.
