On the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak repeated his vow to help Ukraine, saying in a statement Friday that tyranny will never triumph.
He stated that Western nations must renew their commitment to supporting Kyiv in the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions.
“This is the moment to show that tyranny will never triumph and to say once again that we will stand with Ukraine today and tomorrow”, Sunak said in a written statement.
“We are prepared to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, until they prevail”, Sunak continued.
He hailed Ukraine’s courage in the face of terrible suffering, claiming “the country was protecting the very principles of freedom, sovereignty, and the rule of law, on which we all rely”.
During an unexpected visit to Kyiv last month, Sunak proposed a 10-year agreement between the UK and Ukraine on security cooperation.
He also promised £2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) in further military aid, bringing Britain’s total support for Ukraine’s war operations to about £12 billion.
Sunak went on to say, “When Putin launched his illegal invasion two years ago, the free world was united in its response”.
“We stood together behind Ukraine”, Sunak noted.
“And on this grim anniversary, we must renew our determination”, Sunak added.
Saturday marks the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of its neighbor.
