The UK government has urged the United Nations to lead an investigation into the recent turmoil in Bangladesh that led to the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed the UK’s desire for a peaceful and democratic future for Bangladesh following Hasina’s resignation and her subsequent flight from the country.
Lammy emphasized the need for a comprehensive and independent probe into the escalating violence and loss of life in Bangladesh over the past two weeks.
On Monday, in a statement, Lammy stated, “The last two weeks in Bangladesh have seen unprecedented violence and tragic loss of life.”
“All sides must come together to restore calm under a transitional government. The people of Bangladesh deserve a thorough and impartial UN-led investigation into the recent events,” he further asserted.
While Lammy’s statement underscored the UK’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s transition to peace, it did not address Hasina’s asylum request.
The former Prime Minister is currently seeking asylum in the UK, with India providing temporary logistical support.
Hasina arrived at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on Monday, just hours after her resignation, as demonstrators stormed and vandalized the Ganabhaban, her official residence in Dhaka.
Reports indicate that over 100 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured during clashes between protesters and police on Sunday.
A student-led movement opposing a 30% job reservation for the relatives of 1971 freedom fighters largely drove the unrest, a contentious issue tied to the country’s struggle for independence from Pakistan.
India’s temporary approval of Hasina’s stay reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts, with plans for her relocation to the UK pending.
Meanwhile, the UK remains committed to supporting democratic processes and stability in Bangladesh amid the crisis.
