Two merchant vessels carrying petroleum supplies for India are likely moving through the Strait of Hormuz even as geopolitical tensions continue to affect shipping activity in the region. This development comes amid increased uncertainty after Iran claimed ‘full control’ over the crucial maritime route following recent confrontations involving the United States and Israel.
According to sources, the Indian Navy has positioned warships near important ports to extend support to vessels navigating the area. More ships are also expected to arrive from the Strait over the next few days.
At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the passage remains open for ‘friendly nations’ including India, China, Russia, Iraq and Pakistan.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that four LPG carriers have already reached India after crossing the Strait safely.
Officials added that the government is in regular contact with relevant nations to ensure the smooth transit of ships.
Speaking at a joint briefing, Rajesh Kumar Sinha said, “In the Gulf region, there has been no information in the last 24 hours regarding any incident involving Indian-flagged ships or Indian seafarers. All are safe.”
He further mentioned that nearly 20 Indian-flagged vessels, with about 540 crew members, are currently operating in the Persian Gulf without any reported issues.
Sinha also clarified that port activities across India continue without disruption.
“There is no information about congestion at any port. We have confirmed this with the ports. Operations at all ports are running smoothly,” he noted.
Several reports indicate that authorities have restricted vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began. Limited permissions have caused delays and left some ships stranded in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key global energy route, facilitating nearly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum trade.
Indian authorities continue to monitor developments closely. They are focusing on maintaining supply stability. They are also ensuring the safety of maritime operations amid the evolving situation in West Asia.
