Officers said Friday that two 13-year-olds handed themselves in after a fire destroyed a seven-story heritage building in central Sydney.
An arson investigation has been opened by Australian police following Thursday’s fire at a disused former hat factory, which spread to an adjacent building and required mass evacuations before being extinguished.

Australian police said, “Two young people handed themselves in at two separate police stations in the late hours of last night”.
“We have been speaking with these young people throughout the evening and they are now assisting police with our inquiries”, they continued, adding that both were 13 years old.
He invited three or four other young people who were present during the fire to come forward with their parents and tell their side of the story.
Across Sydney, flames higher than the building and a dense column of smoke could be seen after the fire broke out.
According to a fire department video, the entire top-story wall collapsed into pieces on the street below, while the building blazed orange with flames.
As firemen battled the blaze, rush-hour transport to and from adjacent Central Station was halted.
