US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he will engage in separate telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday.
Trump’s statement, made via Truth Social, outlined his intent to broker a ceasefire between the two nations, citing the ongoing ‘bloodbath’ that is reportedly claiming over 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers’ lives each week.
Trump confirmed that the first call with President Putin is scheduled for 10:00 AM local time.
He stated that the discussions would focus not only on ending the war but also on matters of trade.
Following the conversation with the Russian leader, Trump said he would speak with President Zelensky and later join a discussion involving NATO representatives.
‘Hopefully it will be a productive day, ‘ Trump remarked, expressing optimism that these conversations might lead to a ceasefire.
The diplomatic push follows fresh momentum towards negotiations, sparked by a meeting in Istanbul on Friday between delegations from Russia and Ukraine.
Both sides agreed to conduct a large-scale prisoner exchange, with each side expected to release 1,000 individuals.
These steps have been viewed as a tentative but positive development amid a conflict that has dragged on with devastating consequences.
The Istanbul talks concluded with an agreement to reconvene for further negotiations.
While the prisoner swap is not a final resolution, it indicates some willingness from both Moscow and Kyiv to reduce tensions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking from the Ukrainian embassy in Ankara after meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, reiterated his government’s commitment to peace. However, Zelensky also expressed scepticism regarding Russia’s true intentions.
Although he will not personally attend the upcoming Istanbul negotiations, Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov will lead a delegation comprising military and intelligence officials.
He also noted that Ukraine was awaiting confirmation from both the US and Russia regarding the precise timing and structure of the next round of talks.
Zelensky questioned whether Russia’s negotiating team would include decision-makers capable of making binding commitments.
Despite his concerns, Ukraine remains open to dialogue, provided there is a genuine pathway to ending the conflict.
Trump’s initiative to personally engage with the two warring nations adds an unexpected dimension to ongoing international diplomatic efforts.
Whether his involvement leads to a meaningful breakthrough remains uncertain, but the coordinated calls suggest a renewed interest in seeking an immediate halt to hostilities.
As Monday approaches, global attention will turn to the outcome of these critical conversations.
