US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Thursday that plans are underway for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, though no specific timeline has been set, Reuters reported.
Speaking about the potential talks, Trump reiterated his intention to engage with Putin but provided no details on the timing.
Russian News Agency TASS quoted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying, “In case [Trump’s] political will to resume high-level contacts after he takes office persists, then, of course, President Putin will only welcome this.”
He added that Putin has repeatedly emphasized the importance of open dialogue between the two nations.
Earlier, Trump expressed a desire to hold talks with Putin within the first six months of his presidency.
However, Peskov clarified that no formal requests for such discussions have yet been received from the US side.
In December, during his annual year-end news conference, Putin expressed his willingness to discuss a potential compromise with US President-elect Donald Trump on the Ukraine issue.
As quoted by Al Jazeera, Putin asserted, “I don’t know when I’m going to see him. He isn’t saying anything about it. I haven’t talked to him in more than four years. I am ready for it, of course. Any time.”
During his campaign, Trump had promised to resolve the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours if elected.
However, on 7 January, he acknowledged that the process might take longer.
As per TASS, Trump expressed hope that discussions with Putin on Ukraine and other issues could occur earlier than six months into his term.
