US President Donald Trump has put on hold his plan to send federal troops into San Francisco, following discussions with the city’s Mayor, Daniel Lurie, and appeals from several of Silicon Valley’s most influential executives.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump revealed that the federal government had been preparing a ‘surge’ in San Francisco this weekend but decided against it after what he described as ‘friendly advice’ from figures including Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce’s CEO Marc Benioff.
“The people of San Francisco have come together on fighting crime, especially since we began to take charge of that very nasty subject,” Trump wrote. He added that leading local figures had expressed optimism about the city’s recovery, prompting him to delay the deployment.
Mayor Lurie confirmed he spoke with the President late on Wednesday, reiterating his belief that San Francisco is on a path of renewal. “I told our residents and the President the same message: San Francisco is on the rise,” Lurie said in a statement.
He emphasised that while cooperation with federal law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and DEA remains vital, the introduction of troops or militarised immigration officers could undermine the city’s progress.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described Trump’s move as evidence of his readiness to collaborate ‘across the aisle’ to improve urban safety. “The President is ready to work with anyone to clean up America’s cities,” she said, and officials will continue monitoring San Francisco closely while the troop plan remains paused.
The reversal comes after weeks of speculation about federal intervention in San Francisco, echoing earlier troop deployments under Trump’s administration to cities such as Los Angeles and Washington DC.
The development holds particular significance for the San Francisco Bay Area, home to the second-largest Indian diaspora in the United States and a cornerstone of the global technology industry.
Thousands of Indian-origin professionals work in the region, including at Nvidia and Salesforce, companies whose leaders reportedly played a pivotal role in persuading the President to stand down.
