Manipur continues to battle a dengue outbreak, with 77 new infections confirmed across eight of the state’s 16 districts on Friday.
Health officials report that the outbreak, ongoing for the past ten months, has now affected at least 3,114 people in 2025, with one death recorded in Bishnupur district.
According to the Health and Family Welfare Department, Imphal West leads in cases with 2,186 infections, followed by Imphal East (556), Bishnupur (88), Thoubal (74), Senapati (61), Kakching (38) and Ukhrul (35).
The densely populated Imphal Valley districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, and Thoubal, continue to report the majority of cases, while hill districts such as Senapati, Kakching and Ukhrul report lower numbers. Jiribam, bordering southern Assam, has recorded only a single case so far.
Officials attribute the surge in dengue cases to prolonged monsoon rains and stagnant water accumulation, which provide ideal breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito. “The increasing number of infections, especially in Imphal Valley, is a matter of growing concern,” said a Health Department representative.
The department, in collaboration with other agencies, has stepped up vector control measures, including fogging and awareness campaigns across affected areas.
Municipal authorities and the Urban Development Department have urged residents to remove stagnant water, maintain clean surroundings, and use mosquito repellents and nets.
Health officials advise anyone exhibiting symptoms such as high fever, body aches, or rashes to seek immediate medical attention to avoid complications.
The National Centre for Vector Borne Disease Control reported that in 2024, Manipur had 2,463 dengue cases and five deaths. This year’s rising numbers highlight the urgent need for community cooperation and continued vigilance as the outbreak persists.
