President Donald Trump on Tuesday stated that most members of NATO declined to participate in the United States’ military campaign against Iran. He criticised the Allied reluctance while asserting that Washington does not require external military assistance.
Trump noted that although allies refrained from direct involvement, they broadly supported the objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He reiterated his long-standing view that NATO functions as an unequal arrangement, where the United States bears disproportionate defence responsibilities.
The US President further claimed that US forces have significantly weakened Iran’s military infrastructure, including naval, aerial, and defence systems.
According to him, these operational gains eliminate the necessity for allied participation.
Expanding his remarks, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with responses from key partners, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. He indicated that delayed or conditional support failed to meet expectations, emphasising that assistance offered post-conflict holds limited strategic value.
The US President linked the issue to the substantial presence of US troops abroad, citing deployments in Japan, South Korea, and Germany.
Trump argued that the United States continues to safeguard allied nations without reciprocal commitment during critical moments.
The development underscores persistent tensions over burden-sharing within NATO, an alliance established in 1949 on the principle of collective defence.
Disputes over defence spending and operational contributions have frequently strained transatlantic relations.
Trump also referenced his earlier withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, maintaining that the agreement failed to ensure long-term restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
His remarks reinforce ongoing geopolitical friction surrounding Iran’s regional role and nuclear programme.
