Trudeau's Latest Remark Sparks Tension with India in Ongoing Diplomatic Dispute
In recent comments addressing the diplomatic tensions with India, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the global risk if larger nations violate international law without consequences. The strained relations stem from Trudeau’s accusation of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an allegation India rejects as “absurd” and “motivated.”
During the launch of a smart energy grid, Trudeau expressed Canada’s commitment to the rule of law and the seriousness with which they view the alleged violation of international law. He highlighted reaching out to India and allies like the United States to collaborate on the investigation.

Trudeau underscored Canada’s dedication to working constructively with India on the matter. Responding to a question about a Canadian MP’s invitation to the Indian envoy amid the face-off, he expressed disappointment in India’s revocation of diplomatic immunity for Canadian diplomats, calling it a violation of the Vienna Convention.
Despite the challenging situation, Trudeau emphasized Canada’s intention to continue constructive engagement with India. He criticized India’s expulsion of Canadian diplomats, citing concerns globally about violating diplomatic rights.

In response to Trudeau’s remarks, India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, asserted that the allegations are not the Indian government’s policy. He urged Canada to provide specific information, citing Canada’s own challenges with organized crime and extremism.
Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the complexity of issues in Canada, including threats to Indian diplomats and consulates, expressing concern about interference in Indian politics. This exchange underscores the intricate diplomatic challenges both nations face, with Canada advocating for the rule of law and India addressing security concerns. The Ministry of External Affairs is yet to respond to Trudeau’s latest statements.
