Tragic Bus Accident Claims 15 Lives In Yemen's Lahj Province

A devastating accident claimed the lives of at least 15 people and left three others injured when a passenger bus plunged off a perilous mountain road in Yemen’s southern province of Lahj. The tragedy occurred on Sunday in the Maqatrah district, a notoriously dangerous stretch linking the provinces of Aden and Taiz, according to a security official who requested anonymity.

The bus veered off course and tumbled down a steep slope into a rocky valley below after the driver lost control due to brake failure. The official confirmed that among the deceased were women and children. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “horrific,” reporting that the impact was so severe that some passengers were thrown from the vehicle.

Maqatrah is notorious for its treacherous mountain routes, and recent years have seen a string of similar accidents. The latest incident underscores the broader consequences of Yemen’s protracted civil war, which has severely affected civilian safety and infrastructure. Ongoing conflict frequently blocks major interprovincial roads, forcing residents to navigate hazardous alternative routes, including dangerous mountain passes.

Yemen’s conflict began in late 2014 with the Houthi group’s takeover of the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led military intervention. The situation has since escalated into what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
