Gunfire erupted in New York City’s Times Square on Thursday afternoon. One person sustained injuries in the incident. The shooting prompted a major police response in one of the city’s busiest tourist destinations.
According to authorities, the shooting took place at around 3:40 PM local time.
The injured individual was taken to the hospital, while police confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody.
Further details about the victim and the circumstances of the incident were not immediately released.
Witness videos shared online showed scenes of panic as visitors and pedestrians rushed away from the area after shots were heard. Several people were seen taking cover while others ran from the crowded intersection.
Police quickly secured the location, setting up barricades and restricting access as investigators examined the scene.
The area was particularly busy with tourists and visitors attending events linked to the ongoing World Cup.
The incident occurred only hours after New York City hosted a major championship parade for the New York Knicks in Lower Manhattan.
Thousands of officers had been deployed across the city to manage crowds and maintain security during the event.
The latest shooting follows another gun-related incident in Times Square earlier this week.
On June 16, celebrations connected to the Knicks’ first NBA title in more than five decades were disrupted by gunfire near 42nd Street and Broadway.
A 17-year-old boy was injured in that shooting and was later taken to the hospital.
Authorities have not yet announced possible charges in Thursday’s case as the investigation continues.
