Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the 2026 Agricola Medal, the highest distinction of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, to India’s food producers after receiving it in Rome on Wednesday.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “I accept the FAO’s ‘Agricola Medal’ with great humility. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the FAO for this honour. I dedicate this medal to the food providers of India.”
“This is an honour for millions of Indian farmers, livestock keepers, fish farmers, agricultural scientists, and workers. It is also an honour to India’s unwavering commitment, at the centre of which lies human welfare, food security, and sustainable development,” the post added.

Qu Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, presented the medal at the FAO Plenary Hall, acknowledging PM Modi’s efforts in strengthening food security, advancing agriculture, and improving farmer welfare.
The Prime Minister described the Agricola Medal as a reflection of India’s enduring commitment to ensuring food security, promoting sustainability, and recognising the contributions of the agricultural community.
Qu Dongyu congratulated PM Modi and stated that the award recognises his efforts to enhance people’s welfare through key initiatives focused on improving farm productivity and supporting farmers. He also commended India’s role in assisting FAO’s mission to tackle hunger, reduce poverty, and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The FAO chief praised PM Modi’s leadership in transforming India’s agriculture sector through farmer-oriented and technology-driven measures. He further highlighted India’s focus on expanding digital public infrastructure during its G20 Presidency, describing it as a crucial step towards improving access to technology in developing countries.
Qu Dongyu added that these sustained measures have significantly contributed to reducing poverty and strengthening food systems.
