Taliban Says UN Special Envoy To Afghanistan Unnecessary

Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities called the UN Security Council’s plan to send a special envoy to promote gender and human rights in the country unnecessary on Saturday.

The Taliban government is not formally recognized by any country or international organization, and the administration is referred to as the Taliban de facto authorities by the United Nations.

Many are split between embracing Kabul’s leadership and freezing them out until they make concessions such as female reopening educational opportunities options.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution on Friday calling for the appointment of a special envoy for Afghanistan to strengthen interaction with the country and its Taliban leaders.

A new envoy, according to foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi, is unnecessary because Afghanistan is not a conflict zone and is ruled by a central government capable of securing its national interests.

Kabul’s new rulers have insisted on their right to implement draconian social regulations in conformity with their austere view of Islam since the Taliban retook power in August 2021.

They have dismissed calls to follow international law as to meddling in their domestic affairs.

Teenage girls have been barred from attending most secondary schools, and women from universities, sparking international anger and riots in some Afghan cities.

Women were barred from attending parks, amusement parks, gyms, and public baths in late 2022.

The UN resolution came in response to an independent evaluation report issued in November, which called for increased engagement with Afghanistan.

It was adopted when 13 Security Council members voted in favor, with Russia and China abstaining.
