Southern Mexico Hit By 6.5-Magnitude Quake, Two Dead

Friday morning began with a 6.5-magnitude earthquake at 7:58 a.m. local time (1358 GMT), as reported by Mexico’s National Seismological Service.

Epicentre coordinates placed the quake about 4 km southwest of San Marcos in Guerrero, at a shallow depth of 5 km. Tremors reached Mexico City, where loudspeakers issued a seismic alert seconds before the shaking was felt.

Authorities confirmed two fatalities from the earthquake. A 50-year-old woman died after her home collapsed in Guerrero, the epicentre, according to Governor Evelyn Salgado.

A man in his 60s lost consciousness in Benito Juárez municipality, Mexico City, during evacuation procedures. He later died, Xinhua reported, citing officials.

Head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, posted on X that after activating the earthquake response protocol, the latest report indicated 12 people were injured, as well as 18 complaints due to a lack of electrical supply in various neighbourhoods.

Officials also warned that two structures were being assessed for collapse risks, while 34 buildings and five homes were inspected as a precautionary measure.

President Claudia Sheinbaum evacuated the presidential palace during her regular morning press conference as a safety measure. Authorities urged residents in affected areas to follow emergency protocols and avoid unnecessary risks.

Alert systems in Mexico City gave residents critical seconds to seek safety, helping to reduce injuries and prevent panic. Shallow tremor depth intensified shaking across Guerrero and the surrounding regions.

Seismologists continue to track aftershocks and monitor potential risks to local communities.

Government officials emphasise preparedness, structural inspections, and public awareness to mitigate the impact of future earthquakes. Residents are advised to report damage and stay informed about official updates.
