South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol defended his controversial martial law declaration on Thursday, calling it an act of governance. He rejected insurrection charges and vowed to fight any efforts to impeach him or probe the martial law decision.
During a public address, Yoon rejected calls for his resignation. He also responded to the widening investigation by police and prosecutors into his brief martial law decree issued last Tuesday, Yonhap news agency reported.
Yoon explained that he used his presidential authority to declare martial law to “protect the nation and normalise state affairs” amid opposition actions that paralyzed the government. He called it a “highly calibrated political judgment.”
“Whether I am impeached or investigated, I will fairly confront it,” Yoon stated.
