South Korea Imposes Sanctions On North Korea for Its Arms Trade With Russia

South Korea imposed new sanctions on ten individuals and two organizations on Thursday in connection with North Korea’s nuclear programme and arms trade with three nations, including Russia.

North Korea’s defence minister and the military chief of staff are among those facing fresh penalties, according to the ministry.

“The sanctions are in response to North Korea’s illegal activities that threaten the global community, and peace and stability on the Korean peninsula”, the statement reads.

It went on to say, “The sanctions targeting four individuals and two entities related to North Korea’s weapons trade with three countries, including Russia, involve a Slovakian company, Versor S.R.O., and its chief executive, Ashot Mkrtychev of Slovakia”.

The ministry did not provide any information about the weapons trade.

“The sanctions against the North’s defence minister and the chief of staff of the military are in response to the North’s nuclear and missile developments”, the statement continued.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said it would be a direct provocation if Russia helped North Korea boost its weapons programme in exchange for its fight in Ukraine.

Yoon made the remarks during his address to the United Nations General Assembly.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia last week and discussed military cooperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
