Foreign Minister S Jaishankar stated on Saturday that India will await information from Canadian authorities regarding the arrest and charges against three Indian men accused of the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year. Canadian police charged the individuals on Friday and are investigating potential links to the Indian government.
Mr. Jaishankar acknowledged reports of the arrests, noting that the suspects are purportedly individuals with ties to gang activity in India. He emphasized the need to await official information from the police regarding the case. Additionally, he expressed concerns about Canada’s allowance of organized crime groups, particularly from Punjab, to operate within its borders.
India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, highlighted the expectation of receiving regular updates from Canadian authorities on the situation. He emphasized that this issue falls within Canada’s internal affairs, refraining from further comment.

The three arrested individuals, all Indian nationals, were apprehended in Edmonton, Alberta. The victim, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, aged 45, was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver known for its sizable Sikh community. Earlier accusations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau implicating the Indian government in the incident had sparked a diplomatic standoff between Canada and India.
