As per information, Taiwan has reported the presence of two Russian warships off its eastern coast. Taking quick action on the same, the country sent its own aircrafts and ships to screen the movement of the warships. Taiwanese Ministry of National Defence stated that they noted Russian frigates “sailing from south to north in the waters off our eastern coast” as of 11 pm local time (15:00 GMT). Is this some kind of a message to the nation?

Russian warships moved toward Taiwanese naval base

The Ministry of National Defence further stated that the Russian ships “departed from our response zone”. They then went on to southeasterly direction off the port of Suao. Suao is home to a major Taiwanese naval base. However, the ministry failed to mention how far the military base from the island’s coast was.

Why is Russia there?

The distance between the Suao Port of Taiwan from Korsakov Port of Russia is about 3,071 km. objectively, there has to be a reason for Russian warships to be there. The answer lies somewhere in their activity in February 2022. In February 2022, Taiwan had joined the United States along with its two neighboring nations – Japan and South Korea. The nation joined them to enact a wide range of sanctions against Russia. This took place as Russia took a step towards the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia – not the only one in Taiwanese waters

Apparently, Russian frigates are not the only one strolling in the Taiwanese waters. They have one of their friends over there – China. Taiwan, on daily basis reports the presence of Chinese vessels and aircraft operating around the island. Beijing claims the territory as its own and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve its objectives. The two nations are allied well with each other as the two of them share common ideologies.
