Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation on Monday about the latest developments in the Persian Gulf. Moscow pressed for an immediate end to hostilities and urged a political settlement.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the two ministers reviewed a security situation that has sharply worsened because of US and Israeli aggression.
Lavrov described the strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure as wholly unacceptable. He specifically cited the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
He warned that the attacks endanger Russian personnel and could trigger catastrophic environmental damage across the entire region.
Both sides also voiced concern over the dangerous spread of the conflict into the Caspian region, which they said Washington and Tel Aviv had provoked.
Russia said it will keep supporting an immediate cessation of hostilities and a political solution that protects the legitimate interests of all parties, especially Iran, at the UN Security Council.
Araghchi thanked the Russian leadership for substantial diplomatic and other support, including humanitarian aid.
Moscow had already condemned the strikes on Saturday as a brazen breach of international law.
In that statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the American-Israeli tandem continued massive strikes on Iranian military, civilian, and especially nuclear sites.
It said the attacks ignore civilian casualties and the risk of radiological and environmental fallout.
Moscow also noted that the Natanz uranium enrichment plant, which remains under IAEA safeguards, was struck again on the morning of March 21, despite earlier claims that Iran’s nuclear programme had been fully destroyed in June last year.
Russia called the actions a violation of the UN and IAEA Charters, as well as relevant UN Security Council and IAEA resolutions.
