Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his official visit to Mauritius, presented President Dharambeer Gokhool with holy Sangam water from the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, stored in an ornate brass and copper pot.

The gift symbolized a deep cultural connection, as the sacred water from Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam holds immense spiritual significance.

Traditionally, storing Ganga water in copper or brass vessels is believed to preserve its purity and divine essence.

PM Modi’s visit, scheduled from 11-12 March, included attending a special lunch hosted by the Mauritius President.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister paid homage to two key figures in the country’s history – Former Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Former President Anerood Jugnauth – at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses.

This year’s Maha Kumbh, one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings, concluded on Maha Shivratri in Prayagraj.

The event, steeped in centuries-old traditions, saw millions of devotees taking a holy dip at the Sangam, seeking spiritual purification and liberation.

Held in rotation across four sacred locations – Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj – the Kumbh Mela continues to be a defining symbol of India’s spiritual heritage.

The 2025 Maha Kumbh witnessed an unprecedented turnout, with over 66 crore pilgrims participating, surpassing initial estimates of 45 crore over 45 days.

A highlight of the event was the Shahi Snan, where saints and Akharas led grand processions before immersing in the sacred waters.

Key bathing dates like Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti drew millions to the Triveni Sangam, marking the official rituals of the Maha Kumbh.

Through this gesture, PM Modi not only reinforced India’s cultural bonds with Mauritius but also shared the spiritual essence of one of the country’s most revered traditions.
