US President Donald Trump urged Virginia voters to ‘pretend that I’m on the ballot’ during a virtual tele-rally, as he endorsed Republican Representatives Rob Wittman, Jen Kiggans and John McGuire for re-election. Virginia’s congressional elections are scheduled for November 3.
Trump told supporters that turnout had been higher when he himself appeared on the ballot. He linked the three congressional races to his administration’s legislative priorities, including tax and spending measures.
He credited Wittman, Kiggans and McGuire with supporting what he called the ‘Great Big, Beautiful Bill’.
Trump highlighted measures involving taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security, and claimed Democrats would end those benefits and raise taxes. The supplied remarks did not include responses from the Democratic candidates.
Trump separately praised each Republican lawmaker. He highlighted Wittman’s role as vice-chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and his support for military spending and the administration’s tax legislation.
For Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, Trump praised Kiggans, a former Navy helicopter pilot, for her congressional record. He also said she supported legislation targeting insider trading by members of Congress.
Trump described McGuire, a former Navy SEAL representing Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, as a supporter of border enforcement, lower taxes, reduced regulation, military spending and veterans.
Trump also criticised the Democratic candidates Shannon Taylor, Elaine Luria and Tom Perriello, making claims about their positions on policing, congressional trading and immigration. The supplied material did not include responses from the three candidates.
The president repeatedly urged supporters to vote on November 3 or use early voting, while promising further campaign support for the three Republicans.
Early voting in Virginia begins on September 18 and runs through October 31 ahead of the November 3 election.
